Before You Buy a Online Driver's Ed Course in Minnesota

Minnesota approves online driver's education courses from a number of providers, including several large national companies. If you're comparing options, there's one detail that almost nobody explains before you pay — and it costs families time, money, and a fair amount of confusion.

Finishing the classroom doesn't always get you to the knowledge test

Here's what catches people out. Completing 30 hours of classroom driver's education is only part of what Minnesota requires before your teen can take the knowledge test.

To receive the Classroom Completion E-Card — the electronic certificate that lets you schedule that test — your student must have finished the classroom hours and be enrolled in behind-the-wheel instruction with a licensed Minnesota driving school.

At most Minnesota driving schools, including ours, you're enrolled in both when you sign up. So the E-Card is issued the moment you finish the classroom and you can go test.

National online providers work differently. They teach the classroom only. They don't provide behind-the-wheel and can't issue the E-Card. So finishing their course leaves you holding a completion letter and still needing to find a local school and enroll before your teen can take the knowledge test.

What that actually looks like

Families who take a national online course and then come to us typically go through this:

1. Pay for and complete the online classroom course
2. Receive a letter of completion from that provider
3. Search for a local driving school with behind-the-wheel availability
4. Bring us the letter of completion
5. Sign a behind-the-wheel enrollment contract
6. Receive the E-Card from us
7. Schedule the knowledge test

None of it is difficult. But it's several days of steps nobody warned them about, usually discovered right when the teen is eager to go test. And because the classroom and behind-the-wheel were bought separately from separate businesses, there's no package pricing — families generally pay more overall.

Ask these before you pay for any online course

• Is it approved by the Minnesota Department of Public Safety? Approval from another state doesn't transfer.
• Does this provider also offer behind-the-wheel in Minnesota? If not, you'll need to arrange it separately.
• Who will issue my E-Card, and when? If the provider can't, you'll be waiting until you've enrolled somewhere else.
• Is there a behind-the-wheel school near me with openings? Worth checking before you buy the classroom. Instructor schedules in rural Minnesota fill up months out.
• What's the total cost of both halves? Compare that number, not the classroom price alone.

Taking our classroom from outside the Park Rapids area

Plenty of our online students live nowhere near us, and that works well. It's a common situation: your local community education program offers driver's ed, but only as an in-person class that conflicts with sports, work, or your schedule — and they don't have an online option.

You can take our state-approved 30-hour classroom online, at your own pace, from anywhere in Minnesota. We issue your E-Card as soon as you finish, so you can schedule your knowledge test right away. No waiting to line up behind-the-wheel first, and no chasing down a second school before your teen can test — which is exactly where families who use a national provider get stuck.

When you're ready to do your behind-the-wheel somewhere closer to home, just let us know and we'll send a letter of completion to that school. Minnesota requires it whenever the two halves are done at different schools, and it's a message to us, not a process you have to manage.
